No title excuses, Torres warns after signing new deal

LIVERPOOL, England (AFP) – Fernando Torres signed a new contract with Liverpool on Friday and then told his team-mates they have a golden opportunity to end the club's 19-year wait to win the English title this season.

Spain striker Torres agreed an improved deal that will keep him at Anfield until 2013 with the option of a further year's extension and he insists there are no excuses for not winning the title.

"Fernando Torres has put pen to paper on a new and improved contract at Anfield," a statement on Liverpool's website confirmed.

"The 25-year old striker agreed the terms of the deal back in May and has now completed the formalities of signing the new contract."

Rafa Benitez's runners-up finished just four points behind Manchester United in the Premier League last season and Torres is confident Liverpool can hold their own against the top four rivals.

He believes landing wins rather than draws in some of the other tricky fixtures, like Sunday's Premier League opener at Tottenham, will be enough to overhaul United.

"We have no problem beating Manchester United or Chelsea but it is games like Sunday's at Tottenham where we need to show our real title intentions," Torres told The Sun.

"Tottenham is not an easy place to go but these are games we must be winning if this is to finally be our year.

"I am not thinking can we win the title, I am thinking we have to win the title."

After several seasons on the fringes of the title race, Torres believes the experience of going so close last term will stand them in good stead this year.

"We came so close last season but for many of the players it was their first time experiencing the pressure of a Premier League title race," Torres said.

"We have experience and if we don't bring the title back to Anfield I won't be offering up any excuses at the end of the season.

"We don't need to improve a lot on last season to win the title. There is only a slight improvement needed to give the fans and players the title they have wanted for so many years now.

"This is the best Liverpool team there has been in years, that is what many of the experienced players are saying.

"Now is our time. Second best is just not going to cut it with me any more."

WASHINGTON – Rep. Joe Barton had a plane to catch, but he wanted to give college football officials a warning before leaving the highly publicized hearing.

Peering down from the podium, the Republican said in his Texas twang that unless the officials took action toward a playoff system in two months, Congress would likely move on his legislation aimed at forcing their hand.

More than three months have passed, and Barton's bill hasn't moved. Such is the way with college football and Congress.

For years, lawmakers have railed against the Bowl Championship Series, calling it an unfair way to select a national champion. A lot of righteous thundering, however, has not yielded anything on the legislative front.

President Barack Obama joined the fray last year, saying shortly after his election that there should be a playoff system.

"I'm going to throw my weight around a little bit," he said. "I think it's the right thing to do."

But now that he's in office, the recession, two wars and health care reform have taken him away from football, at least so far.

It seems unlikely Congress will take the initiative. To figure out why, just look at a map of the United States.

The current college bowl system features a championship game between the two top teams in the BCS standings, based on two polls and six computer rankings. After the title game, eight other schools fill in the remaining slots for Orange, Sugar, Fiesta and Rose bowls.

Under the BCS, six conferences get automatic bids — the ACC, Big East, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-10 and SEC, in states from Massachusetts to Florida to California to Washington to Illinois. Those conferences receive far more money than the conferences that don't get automatic bids.

"There are just too many senators and congressmen who represent districts where major BCS schools have a very dominant influence," said Gary Roberts, dean of the Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis and an expert on sports law.

"So you're not going to get any senators from Louisiana or Alabama or Florida or Georgia or Tennessee orOhio — those are all states with major state universities that are major BCS powerhouses."

There's been no bill introduced in the Senate this year to revamp the BCS, although GOP Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah said he's looking into it. Mountain West Conference champion Utah was bypassed for last season's national championship despite going undefeated.

Barton, the top Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, is one of several House members who has authored legislation aimed at forcing a playoff. His bill, which has four co-sponsors, would ban the promotion of a postseason NCAA Division I football game as a national championship unless it's the outcome of a playoff.

California Republican Gary Miller has three co-sponsors for his bill that would deny federal funds to schools in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision unless the championship resulted from a playoff system. And Neil Abercrombie, a Democrat from Hawaii, has a nonbinding resolution calling for a playoff system and for aJustice Department investigation. He's got five co-sponsors.

Roberts says it's not enough.

"Sure, you've got Orrin Hatch from Utah who's unhappy," he said. "There are a handful of congressmen and senators from districts or states that feel like the BCS disadvantages them and their constituents, but they're a small minority of the overall Congress."

If there's a silent majority of lawmakers on the other side, "it's only silent as long as the issue is just a bunch of noise," Roberts said. "If a bill actually got some traction, you can bet that (Texas coach) Mack Brown would call the Texas senators, and (Alabama coach) Nick Saban would call the Alabama senators. There's no traction in Congress for doing anything about the BCS."

Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, for example, told The Associated Press that while he supports a playoff system, "the one caveat is I have (a New York school) Syracuse, which benefits from the funding situation because the Big East gets in. You'd have to preserve that."

Barton insisted in a telephone interview that there's a good chance his bill will pass the House this year.

"The key is finding a place on the agenda" in a year crowded with high-profile issues, he said. "We'll keep plugging away."

Hatch, who held a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee's subcommittee on antitrust, competition policy and consumer rights last month, has focused more on getting the Justice Department to investigate the BCS for antitrust violations. He told the AP he's working on letters to both the department and Obama making that case.

"Like I've said in the past, I'm not real anxious to get the government involved in regulating college football, but those who have the power to fix the system should do so — and they should do so voluntarily," Hatch said. "The BCS people don't appear too willing to consider any alternatives."

He said the Justice Department should look into the matter and report back to Congress either way — even if it determines there is no antitrust violation.

"I think this is a big enough issue," Hatch said. "People try to pass this off as some itty-bitty issue. Hey, it involves hundreds of millions of dollars, it involves unfairness, mistreatment."

The Justice Department declined to say whether it would investigate the BCS.

Stephen Ross, director of the Penn State Institute for Sports Law, Policy and Research, and a former lawyer for the Justice Department's antitrust division, said the department will likely look into Hatch's request — but more as a senatorial courtesy than anything else.

He said the department generally takes the position that its resources should be devoted to actions that can't be brought by a private party, and would be unlikely to launch a full-blown investigation into the BCS. Someone other than the department could bring a lawsuit challenging the BCS.

Congress has given the issue a high-profile look this year with a pair of media-generating hearings, but it also held them in the past — including a couple in 2003 that didn't lead to any legislative remedy.

That year, the House and Senate Judiciary committees both held hearings — the latter one requested by Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, now vice president.

"What about the teams that aren't in these conferences and the fans that aren't in these conferences?" he asked at the time. "It looks un-American. It really does. It looks not fair. It looks like a rigged deal."

Vladimir Putin has yet again brandished his macho image, strolling around Russia's top seaside resort watching the football with Dmitry Medvedev - and posing for pictures with young blondes.

The Kremlin prime minister went on a boys' night out with his protege, President Dmitry Medvedev, dropping into a sports cafe in Sochi to watch the Russian national team play Argentina.

Earlier pictures showed a bare-chested and physically fit 56-year-old Putin on a camping trip to the wilds of Siberia.

Putin and Medvedev are rarely seen together in public, and Russian leaders seldom indulge in Western-style casual meet-the-people walkabouts, so observers were bemused and at first thought the pair were impersonators.

One man asked whether they were the 'live' president and prime minister. 'Alive, so far alive,' replied Medvedev, dressed in a black hooded sports jacket and T-shirt.

Putin - who has gone to great lengths to cultivate an alpha-male image - was seen sipping beer and munching pistachios as he watched the football with Medvedev, who stuck to tea and water.

Earlier in the day, Medvedev - tipped to stand aside for Putin to resume the presidency in the coming years - had launched a drive to counter Russia's dire alcoholism rates.

Medvedev, an ardent football fan, was more animated in following a game Russia eventually lost 2-3, while ex-KGB spy Putin - whose sports are judo, riding and skiing - posed with two beaming blonde women half his age.

Russia's pro-government newspaper Izvestia said the cafe was the Black Sea resort city's fanciest night venue, built in the shape of an oil rig, where an entrance fee for men is £20.

Medvedev and Putin are both on working holidays and have official summer residences close to Sochi, which is to host the Winter Olympic Games in 2014. The city backs onto the high Caucasus Mountains.

The appearance of the men together was seen as a move to show Russians that they remain united despite rumours to the contrary.

For their farewell, Putin gave Medvedev a bear-hug, making clear the premier was the senior partner in their relationship even though he holds the junior office.

Medvedev smiled for the cameras. But as he turned away, Russian TV noted his smile evaporated as he took the wheel of his off-roading jeep.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga fought back from 1-5 down in the final set to stun Roger Federer and end the world number one's 21-match winning streak with a 7-6 (7/5), 1-6, 7-6 (7/3) victory in the Montreal Masters quarter-finals on Friday.

The top seed was cruising at 5-1 in the decider against the 2008 Australian Open finalist, who had needed treatment on an elbow injury, but the Swiss star's game collapsed under relentless assault from the Frenchman, with Tsonga twice breaking Federer as the 15-time Grand Slam champion served for victory.

Tsonga set up three match points on Federer's serve in the 12th game, which the Swiss saved, but his luck ran out in the tiebreaker as the seventh seed set-up a meeting with third-seeded Briton Andy Murray.

Federer's loss ended a run of impressive form which began with a title victory at the Madrid Masters in May over Rafael Nadal and progressed through to Grand Slam trophies at the French Open and Wimbledon.

Murray overcame a battle with the elements to stay in contention for his best career ranking thanks to a 6-2, 6-4 quarter-final win over Russia's Nikolay Davydenko.

Murray, who trained in steamy Miami for two weeks leading up to his summer hardcourt return in Canada, said he was able to get on top of the sweltering 30 Celsius heat.

"I like these conditions," said the Scot. "I played quite a lot of long points and I trust the training that I've done. I've worked really hard off the court to be in the best shape possible."

Murray could take the world number two ranking from Nadal if he advances further than the Spaniard this weekend.

Nadal, playing in his first tournament since his shock French Open fourth round exit in May, had a later quarter-final against Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro, while Andy Roddick was facing Novak Djokovic.

The day was historic as the world's top eight players had reached the quarter-finals of a tournament for the first time since the rankings system was introduced 36 years ago.

A number of names have been mooted for Inter'strequartista role, with Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart among those to be thrown into the pot, but Inter could shock the world of Calcio by moving for former Milan player Yoann Gourcuff.

The Ligue 1 Player of the Year scored twice for Bordeaux on Sunday as they eased to a 4-1 victory over Racing Club de Lens, and he has shown excellent control and awareness, as well as a knack of scoring some spectacular goals, in the colours of les Girondins.

According to 24oredisport.com, Jose Mourinho has ear-marked the 23-year-old as another option for his attacking midfield position. While Dejan Stankovic filled in the role last season, Mourinho is looking for a more natural attacking midfielder but his search has been fruitless so far.

This could change if he was to move for Gourcuff, who is valued at €20 million by Bordeaux, around €5m more than they paid for him earlier this summer. The challenge of Serie A remains unfulfilled for the Frenchman, who failed to make an impression at Milan prior to being loaned to Bordeaux.

However, after signing a four-year contract with the French champions it will take all of Mourinho’s persuasive powers to tear Gourcuff away from the Aquitaine side.

Julio Cruz was released from Inter earlier in the summer, and consequently was picked up on a free transfer byLazio, with whom he has already won a piece of silverware.

The Biancocelesti edged the Nerazzurri 2-1 in the Supercoppa Italiana on August 8, a match that is played between the winners of the Coppa Italia and the Serie A champions of the previous season.

Cruz was thrilled to be a part of that victory with his new club, and he is looking forward to what lies ahead for him with the capital club.

“I am pleased to have been greeted so warmly by many of the Lazio fans,” Cruz was quoted as saying by Corriere dello Sport.

“I am feeling very good, and I have been working hard to get myself in the best physical condition for the new season.

“The victory over Inter? Incredible things happen in our lives, and winning the Scudetto with Inter, and then the Supercup with Lazio, is not something that everyone has done before.

“For me, winning in Beijing was not a revenge thing; however, I was just pleased to celebrate with my new team.

“I have repeatedly wished the fans, the coach and my former team-mates well for the future.

“But for now, my fate lies here with Lazio.”

Milan are currently preparing for the 19th Trofeo Tim Cup, an annual triangular tournament between the two Milanese outfits, themselves and Inter, as well as Juventus.

In the lead up to that tournament, and the new Serie A campaign that is scheduled to commence next weekend, the coach of the Rossoneri, Leonardo, has hit back at critics who believe that his side will struggle this season.

“Time will tell in regards to how good Milan are,” Leonardo explained to the Milan Channel.

“There is a good sense of unity and feeling within the team. It’s a really good group of players.

“Now we must turn this into positive results on the field in the league.”

The Brazilian coach, who is expected to give the club’s new signings in Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Flavio Roma an opportunity this weekend, closed the interview by outlining his aim for the upcoming campaign.

He said, “I always aim to give my all with passion and enthusiasm. Again though, we will have to wait and see how far this club can go.”

Real Madrid are considering offering cash plus the services of Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben to Bayern Munich in order to land superstar Franck Ribery, according to a report in Marca.

The France international has been the subject of a prolonged transfer saga and his future at the Allianz Arena appears to be anything but decided.

Real Madrid have allegedly not given up on signing Ribery and are preparing to include two of their Dutch players in order to make the deal happen.

Both Sneijder and Robben are part of coach Manuel Pellegrini's plans, but Real Madrid will not think twice before letting them go if an interesting opportunity arises.

The Spanish paper claims that Rafael van der Vaart is also a possibility, but that Bayern's preferences lean towards the other two Holland internationals.

It is believed Real would also put €30 million on the table, making for a total bid that surpasses the €60m mark and nears the €80m Bayern asked for Ribery earlier in the summer.

According to Marca, cash-rich Manchester City have not given up on signing Lionel Messi and are interested in capturing him at all costs.

The Argentina international is currently in talks with Barcelona over a new contract and City have used that situation to renew their interest in the gifted footballer.

It is believed the Premier League club have approached Messi's agent to let the player know of their interest, having handed the 22-year-old a blank cheque, in effect asking him to name his price.

This is not the first time that City have expressed an interest in Messi. In the winter transfer window, they were ready to pay his release clause, set at €150 million, and offer him €12 million per season after tax.

Messi rejected the approach and it is understood City's new attempt will receive a similarly short shrift as he is happy at the Camp Nou and wants to stay in a team that can challenge on all fronts.

There have been reports linking Cesc Fabregas with a transfer to Barcelona after the Catalan club publicly admitted their desire to have the 22-year-old back in their ranks.

But the player's father, Francesc Fabregas, has now guaranteed the Spain international is fully committed to the Gunners.

"Honestly, I think this signing by Barca will not be produced," he told COM Radio.

"Evidently, the football world is crazy and you never know, but today I think Cesc will stay at Arsenal. He is super committed to Arsenal and he is really eager to do things there.

"If the day comes [when Cesc moves to Barcelona] then it will come, but as a professional and out of respect for Arsenal, where he has always been very well treated, he cannot say anything about these rumours."

Nevertheless, Francesc admitted that his son has strong feelings for Barcelona, the club he left in 2003 for the North London outfit.

"Cesc is Catalan and a cule, and obviously he takes that with him all the time, but he gives it all for Arsenal, regardless of that feeling," he noted.

The French Top-14 rugby season gets underway this weekend with several clubs looking to highly-paid English invaders, including World Cup winner Jonny Wilkinson, to boost their chances of succeeding Perpignan as champions.

A frantic close season saw an avalanche of big-name transfers from English clubs including fly-half Wilkinson, who has joined up at ambitious Toulon, centres Ricky Flutey and Jamie Noon who opted for Brive, Iain Balshaw and Ayoola Erinie at Biarritz and flanker Tom Palmer who will move to Paris to play for Stade Francais.

The English were not the only ones in demand by big-spending French clubs.

Springbok star Francois Steyn has signed on at newly-promoted Racing-Metro, Scottish full-back Hugo Southwell heads to Stade Francias, while Argentine Juan-Martin Fernandez-Lobbe and Felipe Contepomi will also display their talents at Toulon where Philippe Saint-Andre has taken over as coach after his years spent at Sale.

On top of that, the new season will see the return of several top bracket French players such as the hugely popular powerhouse Sebastien Chabal, who moves to Racing-Metro alongside another newcomer, national skipper Lionel Nallet, Julian Dupuy and Benjamin Kayser, who have both joined Stade Francais from Leicester and Sebastian Bruno who moves with Saint-Andre from Sale to Toulon.

What all that transfer activity will mean once the new season opens is up for debate, but at the very least it will certainly spark crowd interest and introduce an element of uncertainly into a league that had become all too predictable.

Last season's big four of Perpignan, Stade Francais, Toulouse and Clermont will once again be the favourites to reach the semi-finals playoffs even though they have followed different paths in the close season.

While Stade Francais indulged in a transfer binge, Perpignan opted to stick with last year's winning formula while Toulouse and Clermont have both brought in fresh faces from less well-off French clubs.

Toulouse in particular will be looking to bring back the glory days that brought them French and European titles in recent years.

Long-time coach Guy Noves, who was bitterly disappointed when his side lost to Clermont in last season's Top-14 semi-finals, said that it was all about confidence building and team management.

"It's going to be a high quality championship, that's for sure," he said.

"On top of that we once again will have to deal with international calls on our players. That's tough. It will be no different this year for all the teams have brought in international reinforcements. We will just have to take it match by match."

Over at Biarritz, French champions in 2003, 2005 and 2006, but who failed to even make the semi-final playoffs last year, club president and full-back legend Serge Blanco said that new players had been brought in to re-galvanise the Basque side.

"In my mind we are starting from scratch," he said. "It feels just like 10 years ago when I first took over the presidency. In that time we won three league titles and reached the final of the European Cup. Now we have a new project and we are building it around new men."

The teams most likely to challenge last year's semi-finalists and Biarritz for the top honours are likely to be Toulon and Racing-Metro as well as Brive who last won the title in 1996.
